How much did the Joker movie gross in cinemas?
Excitement is growing as the release of ‘Joker: Folie a Deux’ nears, with expectations high of another bumper box office haul.
As we await the sequel to Todd Phillips’ ‘Joker’ – which is named ‘Joker: Folie a Deux’ – thoughts have already turned to potential earnings from the cinemas around the world, as well as the likelihood of awards. Given the success of the original, and the teaming up of Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, there’s a lot of positivity around the release.
The billion-dollar Joker at the box office
The new version of the film, which is being referred to by many as simply ‘Joker 2′, has been given an R (Restricted) rating by the Motion Picture Association but that should not hold back its revenue creation. The 2021 installment, which had a budget of less than $60 million, was also R-rated but broke movie records as it became the highest-grossing film of that category taking in $1.08 billion globally, surpassing ‘Deadpool’, which amassed $783 million at the box office in 2016.
Awards for the Joker
In addition to its impressive box office performance, the film received 11 nominations at the Academy Awards. Joaquin Phoenix emerged victorious, winning the award for Best Actor, while Hildur Guðnadóttir took home the prize for Best Original Score.
Moreover, the movie clinched two Golden Globe Awards, two Critics Choice Awards, three BAFTA Awards, and garnered three accolades at the Venice International Film Festival. Here’s a little reminder.
Joker’s box office takings: domestic and international
The film, distributed by Warner Bros., achieved significant success both domestically and internationally, as detailed by Box Office Mojo. Domestically, it grossed $335,451,311, while internationally it amassed $743,300,000, resulting in a worldwide gross of the aforementioned billion plus ($1,078,751,311 to be precise). Its opening weekend saw an impressive $96,202,337 in revenue across 4,374 theatres.
Despite a modest budget of $55,000,000, the film’s box office performance far exceeded expectations. Released on 4 October 2019, it boasted a runtime of 2 hours and 2 minutes. Falling into the genres of crime, drama, and thriller, the film remained in theatres for 455 days or 65 weeks, reaching its widest release in 4,374 theatres.
