The latest shocking ‘Succession’ episode almost had a different ending
‘Succession’ fans were left reeling following the shocking developments in Episode 3 of Season 4.
‘Succession’ fans are still reeling following the shocking developments in the show’s latest episode, ‘Connor’s Wedding’.
Over the course of its four seasons, the show has served up plenty of high drama as it follows the Roy family, the owners of global media and entertainment conglomerate Waystar RoyCo.
The latest Succession episode almost had a different ending
Although fans may were expecting Logan Roy (Brian Cox) would die at some point this season, few would have predicted it to happen as early as it did.
The fact that it happens offscreen during the first part of the episode left fans in shock, with the rest of his family and colleagues dealing with the news.
For much of its three seasons, ‘Succession’ has placed a heightened focus on the relationship between Logan and Kendall (Jeremy Strong).
The back-and-forth between the two has played a key part in the overall narrative, with Logan refusing to allow Kendall to leave the company in Season 3, while also questioning his character.
That’s why some were surprised to see Kendall get the final moment in Sunday’s episode, watching from afar as Logan’s body was removed from his private jet.
Speaking with Variety, director Mark Mylod said the episode wasn’t originally meant to end there.
“It was scripted that way, which sometimes makes it easy, sometimes doesn’t, as in the case of the Season 3 finale where we couldn’t quite find it, and so we had to improvise beyond that to find it,” said Mylod.
“In this case, as always, we shot quite a way beyond that, because I just never say cut unless the film’s rolled out. That was the scripted moments of him watching as the body came down, almost verbatim.
“But because they were in the moment, Jeremy’s character, in some takes, really fell apart emotionally, in some takes was more stoic. We chose a more stoic take. It just felt right with the balance.
Mylod stated that the scene continued on from there with Kendall walking to his car and sharing a look with Roman, before the two of them leave the airfield.
“As the cars drove away, the camera just landed on the ambulance, which then drove away,” said Mylod. “And all the vehicles kind of — oddly, like the end of ‘Ocean’s 11′ — all the players exited the stage, to leave us just with this blank runway. Which was very powerful.
“But ultimately, the more personal close-up of Jeremy’s lovely performance there, with the moon rising behind him, that just felt like the moment to cut to black.”
Will Logan appear in future ‘Succession’ episodes?
Mylod also commented on whether fans can expect to see Cox’s Logan in future episodes, maybe in flashback scenes.
While Cox has said that he would appear, Mylod said that may not be the case.
“The stuff in a subsequent episode, we basically bring him on to shoot dummy scenes — scenes that didn’t actually exist. As a misdirect,” Mylod said.
