Is ‘Scream VI’ on track for a franchise-best opening weekend?
‘Scream VI’ is off to a strong start at the domestic box office thanks to Thursday previews.
The latest entry in the ‘Scream’ franchise looks set for a franchise-high opening weekend at the box office following a strong showing in Thursday previews.
How much is ‘Scream VI’ expected to make this weekend?
‘Scream VI’ made $5.7 million at the domestic box office thanks to Thursday previews, with the movie expanding from 3,125 domestic theaters to 3,675 on Friday.
The film is off to a strong start, especially when looking at last year’s reboot, ‘Scream’, which pulled in $3.5 million thanks to its Thursday previews.
The “requel” then went on to bring in $30 million during its opening weekend in January 2022, with ‘Scream VI’ expected to finish between $35 million and $40 million this weekend, along with a record of over $50 million from its global debut.
‘Scream VI’s’ strong showing on Thursday is also impressive given that ‘Creed III’ made $5.45 million during its preview screenings, before breaking its franchise records with $58.3 million domestically and over $100 million worldwide during its opening weekend.
‘Scream 3′ currently holds the record for the franchise’s highest opening weekend when it brought in $34 million back in 2000.
What you need to know about ‘Scream VI’
Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega return as Sam and Tara from ‘Scream’ as they further entrench themselves as the new leads in the franchise, while Courtney Cox is back as Gale Weathers.
Hayden Panettiere also returns as Kirby Reed after fans thought her character was killed off in ‘Scream IV’.
Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding return as the brother-sister duo of Mindy and Chad from the last film, while new cast members include Jack Champion, Josh Segarra, Samara Weaving and Tony Revolori.
One cast member you won’t see from previous films is Neve Campbell, who played Sidney Prescott in every film in the franchise until ‘Scream VI’.
The 49-year-old stated she wouldn’t be part of the new film after receiving a financial offer that she felt was inadequate.
“Sadly, I won’t be making the next Scream film,” Campbell told Vanity Fair back in August 2022.
“As a woman, I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream.
“I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise.”
