Jimmy Kimmel has reportedly declined to host the 2025 Oscars according to Puck, marking the end of his tenure as the show’s emcee after four previous appearances, including the most recent ceremony in March 2024.

The publication also reported that John Mulvaney has turned down the chance to host the awards.

After the debacle of the 2022 awards, Kimmel provided a safe hand on the Oscars tiller. The viewership statistics from his stewardship in both 2023 and 2024 reveal a notable trend in audience engagement.

The 2023 Oscars outperformed all other major awards shows, surpassing the 2023 Grammys by 50% in total viewership and the previous year’s Emmy Awards by an impressive 219%. In 2024, Kimmel continued to build on this momentum, with the Oscars attracting an average of 19.5 million viewers. This represented a 4% increase from the previous year.

The Oscars have been gradually recovering from the record low of 10.4 million viewers in 2021.

Who else is up for contention?

At present, no other names have been reported to be linked with the role. The 97th Academy Awards are scheduled for 2 March, 2025, and the Academy will need to finalize a host soon to ensure a successful show.
