International drag superstar, Jinkx Monsoon, is set to join the season 14 cast of ‘Doctor Who’, and will play one of the new Doctor’s, most powerful enemies.

While Monsoon’s character has not had their name revealed, the villain is reportedly more powerful than the Daleks, Cybermen, and Weeping Angels.

They join ‘Sex Education’ star Ncuti Gatwa in the new season, who will play the titular Doctor Who himself.

Monsoon won Season 5 of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ and Season 7 of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race: All-Stars’.

How Monsoon got the role

Sitting down with PRIDE magazine, Monsoon opened up about how they were cast in the latest season, which came about largely in part due to their friendship with writer Russell Davies.

“It was kind of a perfect storm, how we became friends. I was dating my now-husband, Michael Abbott, who’s a good friend of Russell’s,” Monsoon explained.

“Our holiday show was coming through Manchester at a time that Russell was in Manchester, and my husband reached out and he came and saw the show.

Monsoon said that after Davies had seen them in their show ‘Together Again, Again’ with Major Scales, where Monsoon played an elderly version of themselves, the decision was made.

“Russell said that he walked home from the show that night and decided, ‘Jinkx is the person I want to have play this role.’ So he advocated for me to play this role, and it’s just one of those moments where everything fell into place at the perfect time.”

When Monsoon’s role in the new season was first announced they said they were “honored, thrilled, and utterly excited to join [Doctor Who]”, adding that Davies is “a visionary and a brilliant writer— I can’t wait to get into the weeds with him and the crew!”

A 60th anniversary Doctor Who special to be released later this year

Before Season 14 premieres, a 60th anniversary special of the show will be released, giving fans a first look at Gatwa as the Doctor and Monsoon as his new antagonist.

The special will consist of three episodes, with David Tennant, who played the 10th doctor, making a cameo appearance.

The special will be released in November 2023, airing on BBC One in the U.K. and Ireland, and on Disney+ internationally.
