Lenny Kravitz set to perform during “In Memoriam” Oscars segment
The singer will perform during the segment honoring the lives of filmmakers during the 2023 Academy Awards
With the 2023 Academy Awards soon upon us, a number of performers have been announced for the big event, and Lenny Kravitz will lead the ‘In Memoriam’ segment of the show.
The segment honors the lives of over 200 filmmakers, artists, and executives who have died over the past year. Following Kravitz’s televised performance, an extended photo gallery will be displayed by A.frame, the Academy’s digital magazine, on-screen during the show at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
What is the “In Memoriam” segment?
The “In Memoriam” segment gives viewers a chance to remember the great filmmakers and previous Oscar winners and their contributions to the film industry throughout their lives. Last year’s honorees included actors Sidney Poitier, William Hurt, Peter Bogdanovich, Michael K. Williams, Carmen Salinas, Betty White, and many more.
The segment was presented by Tyler Perry, who honored Sidney Poitier, Bill Murray who honored Ivan Reitman of ‘Ghostbusters’ fame, and Jamie Lee Curtis who paid tribute to the late Betty White.
“Sidney Poitier was for far too long the only Black man to win an Oscar for Best Actor,” Perry said. “When he stood on that stage, he did more than shatter a barrier, he stood there for all that came before him and sparked the dreams of all who followed.”
Curtis brought out a rescue puppy to bring light to White’s dedication to animal rights and charities.
“She was not only a Golden Girl, she was a legend,” Curtis said. “She brightened every room she walked in and brought a smile to all who watched her on the screen day in and day out, for almost a century.”
More exciting performances are expected during the Oscars
Aside from Kravitz, Rihanna, who recently returned to the live stage at this year’s Super Bowl LVII halftime show, will be performing her song ‘Lift Me Up’ from the movie ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ which is also nominated for Best Song at this year’s award show.
Other confirmed performers are Sofia Carson and Diane Warren, David Byrne, and others.
