Mahomes’ priceless reaction to learning Travis Kelce was dating Taylor Swift: “I gotta see it until I believe it”
The Kansas City Chiefs QB was taken aback when Kelce confided in him about his blossoming relationship with the singer.
Patrick Mahomes has formed a deep, special bond with Chiefs teammate Travis Kelce - their connection on the field quickly transformed into friendship off it. “Without getting emotional, he’s a guy that has really kind of made me who I am in my career‚” Mahomes recently said of the tight end. “[He’s] someone I can just go to at any moment and he’s going to make a big play happen”.
The Mahomes-Kelce connection
The pair have been teammates since Mahomes was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs as a successor to Alex Smith in the 2017 Draft. Since then, a magical, almost telepathic partnership has developed.
And when Mahomes married his fiancee Brittany Matthews in March 2022, he asked Travis to be the groomsman.
The two men couldn’t be closer, but as Mahomes confessed this week, nothing could have prepared for the bombshell admission which Kelce told him in private during a midweek practice. There was someone new in his life - Taylor Swift.
“He told me during the week. It was one of those where I gotta see it until I believe it,” Mahomes explains in the new ESPN docuseries: The Kingdom.
Taylor Swift shows up at Arrowhead
The Chiefs quarterback didn’t have to wait too long for proof. The Cruel Summer singer randomly turned up to watch the Chiefs game against the Chicago Bears at Arrowhead on September 24, 2023. In tow was Kelce’s mom, Donna. That was the moment he realized that the romance was genuine.
“You definitely felt the buzz and you could see people in the stadium gravitating towards where she was up there. At the same time, we had business to handle,” Mahomes recalled.
While Mahomes had already been in on the secret, the rest of the team weren’t. The sight of Taylor Swift, in her red Chiefs top, excitedly cheering on the team from a VIP suite, took many players completely by surprise.
Including Chris Jones: “We were in the locker room like, ‘Taylor Swift’s here. Taylor Swift? For real? With Travis? Oh my God!’”We were like, ‘Oh my God Travis pulled Taylor Swift!’“
Taylor soon became a regular at Chiefs home games, often joined by her new bestie Brittany Mahomes and Momma Kelce. And her romance with Travis has grown into something meaningful, as she admitted on the New Heights podcast last week: “I was like, ‘If this guy’s not crazy, this is sort of what I’ve been writing songs about wanting to happen to me since I was a teenager.’”
