Update:

Legendary rock guitarist Phil Campbell, best known for his decades with Motörhead, has died at the age of 64.

Campbell passed away peacefully on March 13, 2026. His passing was confirmed by a statement shared through his band Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons and by multiple news outlets reporting on his death earlier today.

What Phil Campbell’s family said

In a heartfelt message on Facebook, Campbell’s family said he died peacefully after spending time in intensive care following a significant surgical procedure.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Philip Anthony Campbell, who passed away peacefully last night following a long and courageous battle in intensive care after a complex major operation,” the statement read. “Phil was a devoted husband, a wonderful father, and a proud and loving grandfather, known affectionately as ‘Bampi.’ He was deeply loved by all who knew him and will be missed immensely.”

The family asked for privacy as they mourn his loss.

Cause of death

While specific medical details have not been publicly released, Campbell’s death follows a complex major operation and an extended stay in intensive care. Reports indicate that his health struggles in recent weeks had already led to the cancellation of a planned 2026 tour with his band, which included his three sons.

Those earlier canceled shows, set for Australia and Europe, were called off “due to medical advice,” according to social media posts from the band before his death, suggesting that his health issues were meaningful and serious even before the final operation.

At this time, his family has not released more precise details about what the operation was for, and they have asked for privacy regarding his medical condition.

A rock legacy

Campbell was born Philip Anthony Campbell on May 7, 1961, in Pontypridd, Wales. He gained worldwide fame as the guitarist for Motörhead from 1984 until the band’s disbandment in 2015 following the death of frontman Lemmy Kilmister.

During his time with Motörhead, he played on many of the band’s iconic albums and contributed to tracks that helped define the sound of heavy metal and hard rock. After Motörhead ended, he formed Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons with his three sons - Todd, Dane and Tyla - blending family ties with decades of rock experience.

News of his passing has led to an outpouring of tributes from fans and fellow musicians around the world. Social media posts by fans describe Campbell as both a musical hero and a warm, generous person, with many expressing shock and sadness at losing such a talent at a relatively young age.

Phil Campbell’s influence on heavy metal and rock will long be remembered. From his unforgettable work with Motörhead to his later performances with his own band, he leaves behind a legacy that spans generations of music fans.
