Musicians united in grief following Nashville school shooting
Artists were united in grief following a school shooting in Nashville that claimed the lives of six people, including three children.
Several musicians have taken to social media to share their grief after six people were killed in a Nashville school shooting.
Don Aaron, the spokesman for the Nashville Police Department, says the shooter entered The Covenant School through a side entrance before opening fire. Two police officers responded to a call at 10:13 a.m. local time and engaged the shooter on the second floor.
The shooter had two “assault-type rifles” and one pistol according to Aaron. The shooter, now identified as 28-year-old Audrey Hale, died at the scene.
Prior to identifying Hale, police announced that the victims were Evelyn Dieckhaus, Hallie Scruggs and William Kinney, all aged nine, along with Cynthia Peak, 61, Katherine Koonce, 60, and Mike Hall, 61.
Musicians speak out after shooting
Several musicians took to social media to share their shock and anger at the news.
Maren Morris shared a tweet from the Nashville Fire Department with details of the incident in her Instagram stories with the words: “Oh my god”.
She later added: “I don’t even know what to say. I have been in tears all day. This is our backyard. I don’t know if I know these people but I know they are at the very least friends of friends without even knowing their names.”
Singer-song writer Charlie Worsham wrote in his Instagram stories: “It seems impossible to find fitting words to say about the shooting in Nashville today. I’m heartbroken and enraged that we can’t seem to provide the simplest, most common-sense safeguards for our own children. If this was something other than a gun problem, it’d be happening all over the world. But it only seems to happen here.”
Kelsea Ballerini, who was a student at Central High School during a 2008 shooting which she witnessed, also shared her disbelief.
“I’m heartbroken i’m triggered i’m angry and i’m terrified for the loss we continue to have in this country due to guns. three f**king kids. what are we doing,” she wrote in her Instagram stories.
“No words... The Covenant School. Our children deserve better. Praying for all affected. Tragic America,” wrote Sheryl Crow.
“Pray for Nashville. A shooting at a school has occurred. Three children dead. Praying for these babies & their families. Absolutely devastating,” wrote Carly Pearce, along with an emoji of a broken heart.
