Netflix actor Stewart McLean found dead; police suspect murder
Canadian authorities have found the body of the 45-year-old actor famous for his role in the series ‘Virgin River’: his possible homicide is being investigated.
Last Friday, May 22, Canadian police, through the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), confirmed that McLean’s body had been discovered in the Lions Bay area after he had been missing for several days. The actor was last seen at his home in British Columbia on Friday, May 15. His disappearance was reported three days later.
Investigation opened into possible homicide
Following the discovery of Stewart McLean’s body, authorities officially launched a homicide investigation. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Squamish confirmed that the case is now being handled by the homicide unit.
”As the investigation continues to unfold, homicide investigators are working to collect and analyze evidence, review CCTV footage and conduct interviews to build a timeline of Mr. McLean’s activities prior to May 15, 2026,” officials stated in a public release.
The statement also added: “We are pursuing all available leads as we work to find answers for the family, friends and loved ones of Mr. McLean,” while noting that authorities currently believe the disappearance to be an “isolated incident.”
Tributes from colleagues and industry professionals quickly followed the news.
“I was fortunate to have worked with Stew for more than 10 years,” his agent, Jodi Caplan, wrote. “He was always such a pleasure to deal with - dedicated, professional, eager, and endlessly funny!”
Several directors who had worked with McLean also reached out to the actor’s family to offer their condolences, describing him as a “wonderful” person who would be “deeply missed” by everyone who knew him.
At this time, Canadian authorities have not confirmed whether there are any suspects connected to the possible homicide of Stewart McLean, nor have they disclosed the circumstances surrounding his disappearance and death. The investigation remains under seal to avoid interfering with ongoing police work, while IHIT has asked the public to come forward with any information that could help shed light on the case.
Stewart McLean was a familiar face in television series such as Virgin River, Arrow, Murder in a Small Town, and Travelers, among many others. May he rest in peace.
