Not ‘White Lotus’ or ‘The Gilded Age’: this is the HBO series with Carrie Coon you should binge-watch now

Before she ruled The Gilded Age, Coon delivered one of HBO’s most unforgettable performances, and you can line it up for viewing starting today.

Update:

You might recognize Carrie Coon from The Gilded Age, Fargo, or even Gone Girl, but if you haven’t seen her in HBO’s The Leftovers, you’re missing out on one of her most powerful performances.

Created by Lost’s Damon Lindelof, The Leftovers explores a world where 2% of the population mysteriously disappears, leaving those left behind to grapple with grief, confusion, and a sense of cosmic randomness. While the premise suggests a supernatural thriller, the show is more of an emotional and philosophical deep dive into how people deal with loss.

What role does Coon play in The Leftovers?

Coon plays Nora Durst, a woman who lost her entire family in the event. Her performance is devastating, complex, and utterly gripping, making her one of HBO’s most unforgettable leading women. Across three seasons, The Leftovers transforms from a bleak drama into something almost transcendent – both heartbreaking and, at times, strangely hopeful.

Unlike The White Lotus or The Gilded Age, this series didn’t pull in huge mainstream numbers, but its impact on those who watched it is undeniable, as I can testify. If you’re looking for a show that will stay with you long after the credits roll, this is it.

What else is Carrie Coon famous for?

Beyond The Leftovers, Coon has built an impressive career across film and television. She starred in Fargo (Season 3) alongside Ewan McGregor, played Ben Affleck’s no-nonsense sister in Gone Girl, and took on the lead role in The Nest, a psychological drama opposite Jude Law. She also played Proxima Midnight in Avengers: Infinity War.

Here she is talking about Fargo.

More recently, she’s been seen in Ghostbusters: Afterlife and, of course, HBO’s The Gilded Age. But if you want to see her at her absolute best, my suggestion would be to check her out in The Leftovers.
