Update:

After receiving a rare standing ovation at the Toronto International Film Festival, Nuremberg is slated to hit theaters next month, as Hollywood experts tip the historical drama to challenge for awards.

The film stars Rami Malek as Douglas Kelley, a U.S. Army psychiatrist who is tasked with evaluating Nazi leaders after World War II, as an Allied international tribunal prepares to prosecute them for their atrocities.

Directed by Zodiac screenwriter James Vanderbilt, Nuremberg focuses on Kelley’s efforts to psychologically examine Adolf Hitler’s right-hand man, Hermann Göring, played by Russell Crowe. The movie is based on Jack El-Hai’s 2013 book The Nazi and the Psychiatrist.

Nuremberg’s cast also includes Mark O’Brien, Colin Hanks, Richard E. Grant, Lydia Peckham, Wrenn Schmidt, John Slattery, Michael Shannon and Leo Woodall.

“Psychological battle of wits”

Speaking to Variety last month, Vanderbilt described the movie as “an exploration of what is the nature of evil”.

Kelley and Göring “engage in this sort of psychological battle of wits - two guys who are trying to get one up on the other," he explained. “They end up developing a really interesting relationship.”

The film had its world premiere in Toronto on September 7, receiving a four-minute ovation inside Roy Thomson Hall. Such acclaim is uncommon at TIFF, explain Deadline’s Anthony D’Alessandro and Antonia Blyth. “Even a quick one minute up-and-down is a big deal,” they note.

In Nuremberg, distributor Sony Pictures Classics “has indeed an awards contender on its hands”, D’Alessandro and Blyth add. Variety’s Clayton Davis agrees that the movie is “quite possibly one of the season’s most […] awards-worthy films”.

When is Nuremberg out in the U.S.?

The movie is scheduled to be released in U.S. theaters on Friday, November 7.
