‘Outlander’ renewed for its eighth and final season
Although the show is ending it’s not the end of the ‘Outlander’ universe, a prequel has been revealed to be in the works.
After eight years, the STARZ show ‘Outlander’ is set to come to an end after its upcoming eighth season.
On January 19, the streaming platform released a video where the cast members of the popular series announced that the show would be renewed for its final season.
“It’s been an incredible journey,” Sam Heughan who plays Jamie Fraser explains “Every good story has to come to an end,”
“They always do,” replied Caitríona Balfe, who plays Claire Fraser.
The video goes on to show John Bell who reassures fans, “We’re going to go out with a bang, and tell the story how it should be.”
“It’s not over yet,” Sophie Skelton says “That means we get to be with our characters a whole other year,”
“With love and enthusiasm,” Richard Rankin adds.
Heughan closes out the heartfelt video by saying,” We can’t wait to bring the last season to you guys.”
“We hope that we do you proud,” says Balfe.
Along with the video, the president of original programming for STARZ, Kathryn Busby, shared a statement that read, “For nearly a decade Outlander has won the hearts of audiences worldwide and we’re pleased to bring Claire and Jamie’s epic love story to a proper conclusion.
“But before we close this chapter there is plenty of their passionate story to tell over the course of 26 new episodes and even more to explore this dynamic world and its origin story.”
What will the ‘Outlander’ prequel be about?
Even though the news of ‘Outlander’ is sad, it’s not the last time fans will be able to see this universe and storyline on their screens.
STARZ revealed that a prequel series called ‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ is in the works.
“We are excited to peel back the layers of this vibrant world to bring our audience the origin of where it all began,” Busby said in a statement.
Rumors of a possible prequel began last year but up until now, there was no confirmation on if it was real.
As of right now not much is known about the prequel other than the fact that it will follow “the love story of Jamie Fraser’s parents, Ellen MacKenzie and Brian Fraser.” according to STARZ. It was also revealed that Maril Davis and Ronald D. Moore will executive produce it with Author Diana Gabaldon, whose novels inspired the creation of ‘Outlander’.
How many episodes will Season 8 of ‘Outlander’ have?
Fans can rest assured that the final season with have 10 episodes, but that comes after an extended seventh season which has now had 16 new episodes added to it.
The cast and crew are currently on set filming in Scotland, and STARZ has confirmed that the extended Season seven will air this coming summer.
