Richard Madden reflects on ‘Game of Thrones’ Red Wedding on 10th anniversary
Though his character met a tragic end, it seems things were equally sad off-screen as Richard Madden remembers a lot of tears at the end of the episode.
After almost 10 years, true Game of Thrones fans still have the iconic “Red Wedding” scene fresh in their mind. The scene was both thrilling and traumatic, leading to the death of three of the main characters that the show had been following for several seasons.
The scene was most notable for the bloodbath that occurred in “The Rains of Castamere” episode, killing Robb Stark (Richard Madden), his pregnant wife (Oona Chaplin), and his mother, Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley). The sinister episode was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award due to its notable yet horrific imprint on the minds of all GOT fans.
A sea of tears for the end of an era
While being interviewed by Variety for his newest project, the Amazon series ‘Citadel’, Madden reflected on the trauma both on and off the screen.
“I remember a lot of crying because at the end of it, I was going to be apart from my family that I had lived with for five years — my on-screen mother and my wife and this crew that had spent a lot of time together, so it was traumatic not only to shoot but traumatic because I was losing my family,” said Madden.
In a separate interview with Entertainment Tonight, Madden reflected on the entirety of his experience on ‘Game of Thrones’.
“I still have fond memories of that whole experience,” said Madden. “I mean, not that particular scene, but the whole experience I have fond memories of.
“It’s nice to be back into recurring series drama where you get so much time to tell a story, and you get these huge payoffs like the Red Wedding. Three seasons deep, we got to have this horrible death with characters that you’re invested in.”
Where is Madden now?
As for the present, Madden stars in ‘Citadel’, an action spy thriller created by Josh Appelbaum, Bryan Oh and David Weil and executive produced by the Russo brothers, opposite Priyanka Chopra-Jonas.
‘Citadel’ is now streaming on Prime Video.
