On the same day she passed Kylie Jenner as the most followed woman on Instagram, Selena Gomez has announced that she is taking a step back from social media.

What led to Gomez’s decision?

The announcement comes after Gomez found herself in the middle of some TikTok drama involving herself and Hailey Bieber, wife of Gomez’s ex Justin Bieber.

“I’m going to be taking a second from social media, because this is a little silly. I’m 30 and am too old for this. But I love you so much and I’ll see you guys sooner than later,” she said. “I’m just gonna take a break from everything.”

It all stems from a clip of Hailey that resurfaced on TikTok in which the 26-year-old pretended to gag after Taylor Swift, Gomez’s friend, was mentioned by ‘Drop the Mic’ cohost Method Man.

Just as the rapper teased a “a one-on-one rap battle full of the meanest lyrics about a celebrity since Taylor Swift’s last album,” Bieber can be seen sticking out her tongue and rolling her eyes.

This prompted Gomez to jump into the comments and defend Swift by saying: “Sorry, my best friend is and continues to be one of the best in the game.”

Gomez and Bieber’s relationship

Gomez and Swift have been friends since their respective relationships with Nick and Joe Jonas in 2008.

Since then, Gomez was involved in an on-off romance with Justin Bieber, before the singer went on to marry Hailey in 2018.

The two have regularly stated that there is no bad blood between them, though that hasn’t stopped Selena fans from trolling Hailey on social media.

Gomez and social media

Gomez’s decision to take a break from social media comes after she only recently returned to Instagram back in January.

During an appearance on ‘Good Morning America’ in April 2022, she went so far as to say she had been off the internet for four and a half years.

“It has changed my life completely,” she said at the time. “I am happier, I am more present, I connect more with people.

“I understand how powerful the internet is, and in so many ways it’s done the best things for the world. But for me, I get to my news that is actually important I get through people in my life.”
