Shohei Ohtani’s documentary on ESPN+ and Disney+
The film is set to premiere on ESPN+ in the United States on 17 November, the same date it will also be available on Disney+ for viewers in other parts of the world. According to a statement released by ESPN, the documentary, directed and edited by Toru Tokikawa, features Ohtani’s first in-depth interviews.
“The documentary provides an introspective look into Ohtani’s illustrious career, from his humble beginnings in rural Japan to his journey of becoming a two-way player, the start of his professional career with the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, and his much-anticipated transition to MLB with the Los Angeles Angels,” the statement notes.

The documentary also features interviews and appearances from coaches, players, executives, mentors, and baseball heroes who have played a significant role in Ohtani’s career. Reflecting on the show, Ohtani said, “I am grateful for the opportunity to share my journey in this documentary. Hearing the stories shared by the heroes of my childhood has been truly inspiring. I hope this documentary serves as a testament to the importance of resilience, passion, and self-confidence in the pursuit of excellence.”
After two injury-plagued years, Ohtani had a historic 2021 season. He became the first player in MLB history with over 10 home runs and over 20 stolen bases as a batter, and more than 100 strikeouts and over 10 appearances as a pitcher, earning the American League MVP trophy.
Currently recovering from a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, Ohtani won’t be able to pitch in the 2024 season. Nevertheless, his other skills make him one of the most sought-after players in the league.
