Spielberg reveals why he really turned down Harry Potter: “Kubrick asked me to finish his film”
The director, who has just released ‘The Day of Revelation,’ reveals he didn’t direct ‘The Philosopher’s Stone’ because of a promise to a friend.
Steven Spielberg was originally set to direct the first Harry Potter movie — Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone — before the project ultimately went to Chris Columbus. For years, the accepted explanation was simple: Spielberg didn’t want to spend months away from his family. But now the director has revealed the real reason, and it goes far deeper than scheduling or personal preference. It involves a promise to Stanley Kubrick.
Spielberg and the Harry Potter decision
Spielberg had long said he stepped away from Harry Potter to avoid a long shoot far from home. But he now admits that wasn’t the full story. The true reason was his commitment to A.I. Artificial Intelligence, a film Kubrick had spent years developing before his death.
Kubrick had personally chosen Spielberg to direct the movie if anything ever happened to him — and when Kubrick died in 1999, that request became reality.
“After Stanley’s death, I attended the funeral at his home. Christiane Kubrick and Jan Harlan approached me to ask if I would take over the film, exactly as Stanley had planned. I actually stepped away from Harry Potter, which was supposed to be my next movie. I left it behind to devote myself entirely to A.I.,” Spielberg explained.
At the time, Harry Potter was already a cultural phenomenon, and directing the first film would have been a massive commercial opportunity. But Spielberg chose to honor Kubrick’s wishes instead.
Why A.I. mattered so much
Spielberg confirmed that A.I. Artificial Intelligence was meant to be his next major project after Saving Private Ryan. Kubrick’s death changed everything, pushing him to fully commit to the sci‑fi story his colleague had spent decades shaping.
The film follows: “A next‑generation robotic boy adopted by a family who must discover the truth about his unconventional emotions.”
Starring Haley Joel Osment, Jude Law, and Frances O’Connor, the movie blended Kubrick’s cerebral sci‑fi vision with Spielberg’s emotional storytelling.
