When you think of T-Pain you may imagine auto-tuned vocals, but for his latest album ‘On Top of the Covers’, the artist has opted to use his natural voice to cover Black Sabbath’s song ‘War Pigs’.

The new album, released on Friday, features a number of covers spanning different genres and includes songs by Sam Cooke, Journey, Sam Smith and Dean Dillon, and more.

Each of the cover tracks features T-Pain’s original vocals, showcasing his vocal ability and range, with the auto-tune pioneer showing that he’s talented with or without the audio processing software.

A collection of T-Pain’s favorite songs

The rapper has described the album as a collection of songs that helped him fall in love with music and inspired him to become a musician himself.

“Each one of these songs means something to me and helped me fall in love with music at different points in my life,” he said of the album in a tweet.

The covers’ album has been a long time in the making, with the project having to be put on hold until it could finally be released.

“This covers album has been years in the making. … It got put on hold for a bit, but now that I’m independent, I’m able to do whatever I want to do through Nappy Boy Entertainment and this is something I’ve felt strongly about for a long time,” the rapper said.

“These songs are not what you’d expect when you hear that T-Pain is doing a covers album and that is what I think is cool about it.

In promoting the album, T-Pain posted a series of humorous tweets, with one tweet saying the album was “inspired by white people”.

T-Pain’s weekend shows to promote the album

Beginning on Friday, T-Pain will be hosting three sold-out shows on the weekend to promote the album at The Sun Rose in Los Angeles.

Following the performances, there will be after-parties with karaoke hosted by the rapper, with VIP guests receiving a poster, a meet-and-greet, and the chance to participate in the karaoke contest to win a t-shirt.
