The historic change coming for the future of the Oscars
The Academy looks beyond the 2026 ceremony and secures a groundbreaking agreement that could reshape how millions watch Hollywood’s biggest night.

The 2026 Academy Awards will take place in March, but the Academy is already looking ahead to the future with a landmark broadcasting deal. In a historic agreement, the Oscars will be streamed free on YouTube starting in 2029, making the ceremony available live on the platform for audiences around the world. The deal guarantees that the event will be broadcast there for at least five editions, through the 2033 ceremony. Until now, both the red carpet and the awards ceremony itself have largely been part of paid television packages offered by different operators across the globe.
Neal Mohan, chief executive of YouTube, spoke about the partnership after the announcement: “Joining the Academy to bring this celebration of art and entertainment to viewers around the world will inspire a new generation of creativity and film lovers as we continue the Oscars’ legacy.” YouTube is available across a wide range of devices, including web browsers, smartphone and tablet apps, smart TVs, and video game consoles. The agreement also goes beyond the ceremony itself. The platform will host additional Oscar-related content, including educational films, podcasts, and special programs exploring the awards and their history.
