The real story behind “La Palma”, Netflix’s new disaster show: Is it based on a true story?
The new four-episode series is set on the Canary Island of La Palma and follows a scientist, a team of geological researchers, and a Norwegian family as they face a volcanic eruption.
With just two of the four episodes having been released, Netflix’s ‘La Palma’ is proving to be a massive hit and has already reached the no. 1 position in Spain. The fictional series is set on the Canary Island of La Palma with the island famous for the Cumbre Vieja volcano that last erupted in 2021.
The series focuses on an imminent volcanic eruption which threatens to create global catastrophe as a young scientist rushes to sound the alarm before it strikes.
The series also follows a group of geological researchers and a Norwegian family of four holidaying on the island at the time of the projected eruption with the series directed by Denmark’s Kasper Barfoed.
Cumbre Vieja blows in 2021
The island of La Palma is the most western of the Canary Island archipelago with the 706 square kilometers populated by 80,000 people.
The island is famous for the Cumbre Vieja, the most active volcano in the Canary Islands which erupted previously in 1949 and 1971 and clearly has been more than inspirational in the creation of the series.
