The wait is over! Yellowstone 5B kicks off the epic final chapter: Everything you need to know
Six years after its television debut, the fifth and final instalment of American neo-Western drama Yellowstone is set for release.
Originally released in 2018 and released by Paramount, Yellowstone is the creation of Taylor Sheridan and John Linson and follows the fictional Dutton family, led by John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner), who control the biggest contiguous ranch in the United States which is under continuous attack by land developers and Indian tribes.
The series offers a deep study of a violent world far from media scrutiny, where land grabs made developers billions with politicians bought and sold by the largest oil and lumber corporations at the time.
Over the years, the series has been shot in a number of different locations including initially, Park City (Utah) with production moving to Missoula in Montana in 2020.
The series has become something of a ‘slow burner’ in terms of audience numbers seeing a season-on-season growth with the season 3 opener attracting 7.6 million viewers with the same show for season 4 boasting a viewership of 12.7 million.
Critical response to the series has generally been positive with Costner receiving high acclaim for his role as Dutton which culminated in 2023 with the veteran actor winning the Golden Globe award in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series Drama category.
What to expect in Yellowstone 5B
With no plans for a sixth series of Yellowstone following Costner’s decision to leave the show, the fifth series focuses on internal family tensions as the Dutton’s do all in their powers to save the ranch.
Paramount plan to continue the story with a sequel series called The Madison but there’s no official timeline for release just yet. The Madison will focus on an all-new family, the Clyburns, who arrive in Montana after leaving New York. Michelle Pfeiffer and Matthew Fox will lead the cast.
Other shows in the Yellowstone universe are in the pipeline beginning with 1883, which tells the origin story of the Dutton family and how they came to own the Yellowstone Ranch.
1923 picks up that story a generation later, and its second season is also planned with Paramount also announcing a show titled 1944, with no details available, and a show titled 6666, which could possibly be an offshoot of Yellowstone set at the Four Sixes Ranch in Texas.
