Jennifer Love Hewitt is expected to return as Julie James in the next installment of the 90s slasher series I Know What You Did Last Summer with a still untitled sequel in the pipeline and due for release in the summer.

The actress was just 17 years old when she played Julie James, a college student involved in a hit-and-run while she and her pals were driving back from a day out at the beach. After dumping the body, the friends hope the accident will be overlooked... but someone knows what happened - the Fisherman, who embarks on a blood-curdling killing spree, terrorizing Julie and her gang.

Jennifer Love Hewitt: a new film and a new book

Jennifer told Variety that she is honored to be invited back for the third movie - a direct legacy sequel to the first two films. “To be thought of in that way, to not just move on to the newer, better, younger versions, but to come back and play that part is really cool,” she said. “We’re trying really hard to make it work. We’re so close, guys! I promise I’ll make a fun announcement, and it’ll be amazing.

She admitted having some reservations about going back to a role which launched her career, and needs time to think before accepting. “I think that a big part of the reason we’ve taken a minute is I don’t want to just be like, ‘Oh, there’s the ghost of ’90s past for five seconds in the movie.’ I want to have her come back, be there for a reason, play a real part, and show the audience who she’s become 27 years later,” she explains.

I think the scariest thing about the movie will probably be people seeing me as 45, since they saw me last time at 21. They might not even need to do anything else in the film — just do a real closeup with no filter, and there you go! But I’m really excited and really honored, and just fingers crossed that everything falls into place“.

“Turning sorrow to celebration”

A lot has happened in the 28 years since Jennifer’s appearance in ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’. In 2013, she married actor Brian Hallisay who she met on the set of The Client List. The couple have three children: Autumn, Atticus and Aidan.

As well as her film and television, Jennifer also pursued a career in music, releasing four studio albums: Let’s Go Bang, Love Songs, BareNaked and a self-titled release from 1996.

She also has a new book out called Inheriting Magic in which she shares her experience of losing her mother Pat, who passed away from cancer in 2012 aged 67. Her book encourages turning sorrow to celebration - “I found myself through grief — as a wife, mommy, magic-maker and Holiday Junkie“.
