Tupac Shakur to get street named after him in California
The late rapper will have a stretch a street in Oakland named in his honor.
The city council in Oakland, California have unanimously voted to rename a street in honor of late rapper Tupac Shakur.
Members voted on renaming a stretch of MacArthur Boulevard between Grand Avenue and Van Buren Avenue, where the rapper once lived, on Tuesday.
The street will be called Tupac Shakur Way, though a timeline for the renaming hasn’t been announced by city council just yet.
Although the rapper was born in New York City and lived in Baltimore before moving to California, he said in a 1993 interview that Oakland is where he got his “Game”.
“When I got to Oakland that’s when I learned the Game,” he said. “I give all my love to Oakland, if I’ma claim somewhere I’ma claim Oakland.”
According to NBC News, all plaques and commemorative signs singling the change will be paid for by the Tupac Shakur Foundation.
“Tupac Shakur’s legacy will continue through his contributions in art and social outreach, through his family and fans, touching countless lives of children and elders over the years while alive and after his death, taken too young by gun violence,” reads the resolution.
Shakur was also honoured in 2016
The street renaming isn’t the first time Tupac has been honored by the area.
Back in 2016, then Mayor Elizabeth Schaaf declared June 16 - the musician’s birthday - as Tupac Shakur Day.
The rapper was only 25 when he was killed in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas in 1996. His family honored his legacy by opening up a pop-up restaurant in California last year.
Powamekka Cafe was opened in Los Angeles, where he also lived, on June 16, 2022.
The rapper came up with he concept prior to his death, as he dreamed of a place for “divaz” and “playaz” according to notes found by his family and shared on his official Instagram page when the cafe was announced.
