Venom: The Last Dance: critics go in hard on new movie
With the release of the latest film in the saga starring Tom Hardy, we check out the early reviews.
This week, Venom: The Last Dance hit the big screen, and the first reviews for the film are already out. Critics have shared their not-so-favorable feedback for the third and final installment of the saga starring Tom Hardy.
Thumbs down for Venom’s Last Dance
According to the official synopsis from Sony Pictures, The Last Dance sees “Tom Hardy return as Venom, one of Marvel’s greatest and most complex characters, for the final film of the trilogy. Eddie and Venom are fugitives. Hunted by both their worlds and with the net closing in, the duo is forced to make a devastating decision that will bring their last dance to an end.”
Deadline reports that Venom 3 is expected to pull in only $65 million domestically. Internationally, it’s projected to gross $85 million, bringing the total global opening weekend to around $150 million. Here’s the trailer and the first reviews of the film.
Early reviews of ‘Venom: The Last Dance’
Metacritic, which compiles reviews and ratings from major media outlets, gives Venom: The Last Dance a score of 42/100, with reviews from outlets such as Screen Rant, The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, IndieWire, and Vanity Fair.
On Rotten Tomatoes, Venom: The Last Dance has a 40% rating based on 63 reviews.Richard Lawson from Vanity Fair remarked, “For the most part, the indifferent and apathetic tone of the movie feels like an insult to viewers, especially those willing to pay real money to see it.”
The Associated Press noted, “I kept waiting for the surprisingly inert The Last Dance to drop its world-saving plot (and its CGI effects) and focus more on its most potent effect: Hardy’s dual-act, dual-personality performance.“
Brian Truitt from USA Today commented, “The result is another mediocre comic-book adventure for Spider-Man’s favorite antihero, which becomes both quirky and serious, losing some of the bite of its main character, though it does give the grumpy Venom a new twist: a big bad dad.”
Owen Gleiberman from Variety wrote, “Watching The Last Dance, the film erases any distinction between filming everything possible and taking a leap into the void while simply saying: ‘What the hell?! Let’s do it.’"
