Back in 2004, rumours were rife that David Beckham had been unfaithful to wife Victoria. At the time, Rebecca Loos, his former aide, claimed to have had an affair with the former soccer player, who was then playing for Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Almost 20 years later, both Victoria and David discussed how the speculation affected their marriage in the Netflix documentary series Beckham, which was released on 4 October.

The former Manchester United player was asked about how he dealt with “the multiple tabloid stories” covering the alleged affair, an angle which has left Loos less than impressed. After all these years, the 47-year-old has broken her silence, attacking Beckham for his responses.

Loos attacks Beckham for playing the victim

At no time during the docuseries does Beckham make direct reference to a relationship with Loos or admit to being unfaithful, instead describing the stories as “horrible.” In an exclusive interview with British tabloid Daily Mail, Loos says, “It’s all, ‘poor me’. He needs to take responsibility.”

“He can say whatever he likes of course and I understand he has an image to preserve, but he is portraying himself as the victim and he’s making me look like a liar, like I’ve made up these stories. He is indirectly suggesting that I’m the one who has made Victoria suffer,” she adds.

It has been widely reported in the media that Rebecca has been living a quiet life for the last 14 years in Norway, where she lives with her husband and two children. However, following the release of Beckham, she has been dragged back into the spotlight and has been harassed on social media as a result.

Alleged affair “horrible but true”

Loos herself admits that “the stories were horrible, but they’re true”.

“I think if he was going to touch on this time and how difficult it was, it would have been really nice for him to have said ‘it was not my proudest time’. The worst bit for me is that he says he didn’t like seeing his wife suffer. That bothered me. Because he’s the one that’s caused the suffering,” she tells the media. “But he specifically made it look like my fault, that he had nothing to do with this.”

Rebecca Loos: “If I stay silent, I will be known as the liar”

In the interview, Loos reveals she was hesitant about reacting to how she has been portrayed in the docuseries: ‘It took me a long time to decide whether to speak about this today… if I remain silent I will be known as the liar, the one who made up the stories.

“And I also have a family and I also have children and they also have Google and they can also watch documentaries. And I want them to know that their mother was brave enough to stand up against them and to stand up for the truth.

Almost two decades later, Loos admits to still feeling guilty about what happened and says it was never her intention to ruin the Beckhams’ marriage. At the same time, she acknowledges that if she had never gone through what she did, she wouldn’t have gone on the reality TV show on which she met her husband.

“Things happen for a reason. And now I have a wonderful life with my incredible husband and children.”
