Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s Wrexham AFC achieved National League promotion over the weekend, and now that the Hollywood duo have pushed their team to the Tier Two professional ranks, they are tasked with maintaining the soccer team’s new position on the world stage.

Wrexham’s big win Saturday

Wrexham secured a win after falling behind on the scoreboard Saturday against Boreham Wood, securing their place in League Two next season.

Reynolds and McElhenney are now looking at how to keep up the momentum as Wrexham enters the professional league. The co-owners will now take all measures available to hold on to the 35-year record following Saturday’s win, with the ‘Red Dragons’ looking to play as an EFL club for keeps.

“I’m not sure I can actually process what happened tonight, I’m still a little speechless,” Ryan Reynolds told BT Sport Saturday after the game. “One thing that is running through my head over and over again is people saying at the beginning ‘Why Wrexham?’”

“This is exactly why. What is happening right now is why,” Reynolds explained. “Boreham Wood showed up today. They are an incredible team. This entire story, the reason why we are all on the edge of our seats is because Notts County are so damn good as well.”

“They deserve to go up. That is something we feel quite strongly about. We are rooting for them. We want to see them go up and face them in League Two because they’re incredible.”

The following morning, Reynolds took to Twitter to celebrate further.

“Everything I own smells like champagne, beer and grass. I’m still somewhere between giggling and sobbing. This town and this sport is one of the most romantic things on earth. Thank you, @Wrexham_AFC,” Reynolds wrote Sunday morning.

From major underdog to Tier Two promotion

Wrexham AFC achieved League Two promotion Saturday after 15 long years of being relegated to ranks lower than even the fourth tier league the team competed in this year.

Wrexham lost the Tier Four promotion to Stockport County the previous season, and advanced to the semi-pro ranks this term — finally gaining fourth tier status.

Since then, Reynold’s soccer club has the responsibility of owning a long-standing record that was established in 1986/1987 when the National League implemented the automatic promotion system — it’s rare for teams to be relegated back down after fourth tier promotion. Out of 24 teams promoted between 2010 and 2021, four of them have been relegated.

Wrexham will now want to ensure it does not happen to them, but things look good for the soccer team as they racked up a record number of regular season points, surpassing the bottomline necessary.

Wrexham before Reynolds and McElhenney

The last time Wrexham competed in the professional ranks was 2008, after which they played in lower ranks for their die-hard local fans, with little other following or future.

The Hollywood actors began pursuing the team, and in late 2020 made a list of seemingly lofty promises to lead the team to not just the professional leagues, but to achieve global status. One by one, the Hollywood pair are meeting each unlikely pledge.
