Prince Harry will attend King Charles’ Coronation next month, but Meghan Markle will not be by his side.

How Meghan Markel will spend Coronation weekend

Harry’s attendance at the event was confirmed on Wednesday by a palace spokesperson, who also revealed Markle will not be joining him.

“Buckingham Palace is pleased to confirm that the Duke of Sussex will attend the coronation service at Westminster Abbey on May 6,” they said in a statement.

“The Duchess of Sussex will remain in California with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.”

Markle will thus remain at the Sussexes’ home in Montecito, California with the two children, and it appears Archie’s birthday, which falls on the same day as the Coronation, played a part in their final decision according to friend Omid Scobie.

“I understand that Archie’s fourth birthday (also on May 6) played a factor in the couple’s decision,” tweeted Scobie.

“Expect it to be a fairly quick trip to the UK for Prince Harry, who will only be attending the coronation ceremony at Westminster Abbey.”

Harry’s plans for the Coronation

While there will be three days of events surrounding the Coronation, Harry isn’t expected to attend any of them outside the crowning ceremony.

Buckingham Palace didn’t comment on whether Harry will join King Charles, Queen Camilla and other members of the royal family on the balcony following the coronation.

The event will mark the first time Harry will meet with members of the royal family since the release of his memoir, ‘Spare’, in January.

Revelations in the book only added to the tension between Harry and his family, with royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams telling the Daily Mail the Sussexes’ decision is likely the best compromise.

“Meghan will be with Archie on his fourth birthday. This is probably an ideal compromise,” said Fitzwilliams.

“For months I hoped for reconciliation but after Spare, the interviews promoting it and the Netflix docuseries it is obvious that this is highly unlikely to happen and that the Sussexes’ rift with the royal family is very serious.

“The Sussexes are unpredictable. Their endless attacks on the royal family have been extremely damaging. They have affected its popularity especially among the young.

“This has become something of a circus. They should find constructive roles in which to employ such talents as they have.”
