Bad Bunny has become one of the most iconic artists on the planet, with his music smashing streaming records and his concerts selling out some of the world’s biggest arenas. His popularity has led him to perform on prominent stages such as the renowned Coachella festival, the Grammys, Saturday Night Live, and now, the 2024 Oscars, where he will present an award.

Does Bad Bunny speak English?

Bad Bunny, whose legal name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, was born in Puerto Rico and is proud of his heritage. He always speaks in Spanish, whatever the event.

In September of last year, in an interview with Vanity Fair, Benito spoke about his commitment to singing in Spanish. “I'm never going to [sing in English] just because someone says I need to do it to reach a certain audience,” Bad Bunny told the outlet.

The reggaeton player clarified that if the opportunity arose with the right song or collaborator, he could sing in English. He also added: “It's not that I hate the idea… It's just that I feel more comfortable in my own language. I think in Spanish, I feel in Spanish, I eat in Spanish, I sing in Spanish.”

And this doesn’t just apply to music. For example, during his Saturday Night Live monologue, he appeared with Pedro Pascal, who served as a “translator.” Furthermore, during his sketches, he spoke in Spanish and only a little English. Even when presenting the award for Best International Feature Film at the Academy Awards, Bad Bunny spoke in Spanish, with the exception of “And the award goes to...” with some help from Dwayne Johnson!

Why is his name Bad Bunny?

Although Benito refuses to speak in English, his name is in that language, but why did he choose it?

As for his stage name, as has been revealed in certain interviews, he chose it because when he was a child, he was forced to wear a rabbit costume to go to school. A photo emerged of him wearing the bunny suit in which he looked visibly angry and that was the inspiration for his new name.
