On Friday, New York and areas in neighboring New Jersey and Philadelphia were affected by a serious earthquake and its resulting 4.8 magnitude tremors. At this time, details continue to emerge but so too does the outpouring of shock, concern and even jokes on social media.

Celebrities express their sympathies for NYC earthquake victims

With reports continuing to pour in following a heavy earthquake in New York City on Friday, the true cost of the unprecedented natural disaster is still yet to be determined, with no official word on any possible death toll or the financial cost attached to the damage caused. As we understand it, tremors were felt as far afield as Philadelphia and Boston, with the magnitude 5.5 quake occuring at a depth of 10 kilometeres (6.21 miles) according to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre. Yet, if there is one positive, it’s been the unison in which many celebrities have come foward to express their thoughts and sympathies for those affected by the disaster.

Indeed, first among them was property mogul Barbara Corcoran who took a light hearted approach to the situation by posting a video in which she can be seen standing in a bathtub with a coffee cup in hand and swaying side to side. The caption of her video cheekily read ‘everyone in NYC right now’, while the backing track appeared to be ‘I Feel The Earth Move’ by Carole King. Of course, there were also a number of more somber reactions such as former CNN anchor Don Lemon who wrote, “Totally just had an earthquake in New York. Did you feel it?” Incidentally, Lemon is due to marry his longtime partner Tim Malone in Manhattan this weekend.

It wasn’t long before Lemon’s sentiments were echoed by the likes of actress Busy Phillipps who asked “Like guys. I think there was an earthquake in NYC.” There was also Oscar-winning actress Jessica Chastain who asked directly, “Did we just have an earthquake?! NYC,” before speaking to those who might have been affected in a more serious way. “This is really nuts. Hope everyone is ok and that our buildings weren’t damaged,” she posted. Yet, perhaps it was Cara Buono’s take which was the most noteworthy.

The ‘Mad Men’ and ‘Stranger Things’ actress disclosed that she was not in the best possible position when the quake occurred. “Haven’t been here in a while but: what are the chances of being in an earthquake in the middle of a mammogram in NYC. The lovely tech and I had quite a laugh (when it was over). Even when there’s an earthquake it’s importnat to have your mammogram!”, she wrote. Others included American commentator Chris Hayes who incredulously asked, “Uh that was an earthquake in NYC????” Ultimately, the true take on what has happened in NYC is still coming into focus but it’s worth noting that while the city is not considered a tremor hotspot, experts have warned for some time that the area is long overdue an earthquake. The last time it did was way back in 1884
