Johnny Depp has made his comeback at the Cannes Film Festival, with the 59-year-old actor set to star in the upcoming film ‘Jeanne du Barry’.

The film made its official world premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival on May 16. It will also be released in French movie theaters the same day.

Founded in 1946, the Cannes Film Festival was created to show recognition of artistic achievement in the entertainment industry.

‘Jeanne du Barry’ is already making headlines given it will be Depp’s first feature film since 2020′s Minamata, which premiered at the Berlin film festival.

It will also be his first project since a Virginia jury mostly sided with him in his defamation lawsuit against ex-wife Amber Heard.

Depp accused Heard of defamation for an op-ed where she claimed she was the victim of domestic abuse. The court favored Depp, and the pair have since settled and decided to toss out their appeals.

Although Heard will pay $1 million, she said in a statement: “I have made no admission. This is not an act of concession. There are no restrictions or gags with respect to my voice moving forward.”

She also added: “I make this decision having lost faith in the American legal system, where my unprotected testimony served as entertainment and social media fodder.”

Depp and Heard’s lengthy trial came after Depp also lost a libel case in the UK in March 2021 after suing the Sun for calling him a “wife-beater”.

What is ‘Jeanne du Barry’ about?

An official synopsis of the film reads:

“Jeanne Vaubernier (Maïwenn), a young working-class woman hungry for culture and pleasure, uses her intelligence and allure to climb the rungs of the social ladder one by one.

“She becomes the favorite of King Louis XV (Depp), who, unaware of her status as courtesan, regains through her his appetite for life.

“They fall madly in love. Against all propriety and etiquette, Jeanne moves to Versailles, where her arrival scandalizes the court.”

Who stars in ‘Jeanne du Barry’?

Along with Maïwenn being both the director and starring in the film with Depp, the movie also includes other stars such as Louis Garrel, Pierre Richard, Melvil Poupaud, Noémie Lvovsky, Benjamin Lavernhe, India Hair, Pascal Greggory, Vincent Colombe, Micha Lescot, Marianne Basler and more.
