What you need to know about ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’
Fans can catch the movie, starring Chris Pratt as Mario, in theaters April 5.
The much-anticipated ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ is hitting theaters April 5, with an all-star cast and epic plot.
The nostalgic Nintendo franchise has widely surpassed the gaming world and has gone mainstream, encompassing all aspects of entertainment as both pioneers and trendsetters — maintaining the loveable characters, while experimenting with modern, cutting-edge technologies.
For almost four decades, Nintendo’s Super Mario Brothers has been iconic in the pop culture world. Mario and Luigi and their notorious red and green overalls and caps that signify the fun to come are as prominent as ever, with the movie featuring ‘goomba stompin’, fireball tossin’, pipe slidin’ Italian plumbers.”
The ‘Super Mario Bros.’ cast
The movie, directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, who collaborated on the ‘Teen Titans Go!’ movies, and screenplay by Matthew Fogel of ‘The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part’, and Illuminations’s ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’, stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, and Charlie Day as Luigi.
The news of Pratt as Mario was somewhat surprising to fans, as the role has previously been voiced by Charles Martinet.
Pratt shared a video announcing his role to Instagram, expressing his enthusiasm for the project.
“It’sa me,” he wrote, referencing Mario’s exaggerated American-Italian accent, “that’s not the voice, you’ll have to wait to hear the voice, but we’ve been working hard at it.”
Jack Black will appear as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.

‘The Super Mario Bros. Move’ is produced by founder and CEO of Illumination, Chris Meledandri and Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto, and financed by Universal Pictures along with Nintendo, and released globally by Universal Pictures.
Illumination Studios also produced ‘Despicable Me’, ‘Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax’, ‘Minions’, ‘The Secret Life of Pets’, ‘Sing’, and the sequels to the above films.
Composer Brian Tyler, whose music is featured in ‘Yellowstone’, the ‘Fast and Furious’ franchise, and ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, has prepared the film’s musical score, assisted by ‘Super Mario’ franchise veteran, Koji Kondo.
