Hollywood, paralyzed: The Screen Actors Guild goes on strike. When does the strike start, which film and series shoots does it affect? Here are the details.

Estados UnidosUpdate:
Hollywood, paralyzed: Actors' strike begins, these are the affected productions

It’s official. The entertainment industry in Hollywood is at a standstill.

On the morning of this Thursday, July 13, hundreds of film and television actors voted in favor of joining the writers’ strike, which began in May; resulting in the first walkout in the Screen Actors Guild since July 1980.

When does the strike start in Hollywood?

According to what was announced by the national board of the Actors Union, the union will officially go on strike starting tomorrow, Friday, July 14.

The strike will begin at midnight today and all of us, union members, leadership and staff we will be on the picket lines tomorrow morning, National Executive Director and chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland said at a press conference held this Thursday in Los Angeles.

The strike comes into effect after four weeks of negotiations on a new collective agreement, especially with streaming platforms; because the actors demand a fairer treatment: transparency with the audience and box office data in order to obtain the royalties they really deserve. They also ask for a regulation on the use of artificial intelligence as well as a payment for using their image when creating incarnations generated by AI.

Actors now face an existential threat for their livelihoods with the rise of generative AI technology. We proposed contract changes which address these issues but the AMPTP has been uninterested in our proposals, added the union representative.

At some point, the jig is up. You cannot keep being dwindled and marginalized and disrespected and dishonored. The entire business model has been changed by streaming, digital, AI,said SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher.

Actors' Strike: What filming and series does it affect?

The strike is expected to affect both filming and the promotion of various series and films.

Also big blockbusters, like Oppenheimer and Barbie will suspend their promotional tour, even though they are only a few days away from the premieres of both films.

Other big movies that are in production and will be affected by the strike are Wonder Woman 3, Ghostbusters 4, Mufasa: The Lion King and the third and fourth installments of Avatar, Beetlejuice 2, Paddington in Peru, Amateur, Gladiator 2, The Radleys, Mortal Kombat 2, Heads of State, Wicked and even Speak No Evil.

Regarding television series, affected productions include House of the Dragon, The Last Of Us, Andor, Day of the Jackal, Industry, Bad, Doctor Who, Alien, The White Lotus and Emily in Paris, just to mention a few . The 75th Emmy Awards Gala is also expected to be affected.

Although the previous paragraphs mention the most important productions, dozens of shows are expected to be affected. In fact, the only productions that will not be affected are those that are not covered by labor contracts with unions, that is, those that are independent.
