Warner Bros has confirmed that ‘The Lord of the Rings’ will return to theaters with an unpublished story focused on the curious character of Gollum.

New times for the Tolkien saga on the big screen. The development of a new film set in the universe of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ has been confirmed, focusing on one of its legendary characters: Gollum. In fact, the film has already revealed that it will be titled ‘Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.’

Andy Serkis will not only reprise his role as the protagonist but will also step behind the camera as director. Although it does not yet have an official release date, it has been disclosed that Warner Bros intends to bring it to theaters at some point in 2026.

Peter Jackson will also participate in the film as a producer, alongside his usual screenwriting partners: Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. His involvement will influence “every step” of the film, so it will not be merely anecdotal.

“It is an honor and privilege to be able to journey back to Middle-earth with our great friend and collaborator Andy Serkis, who still has unfinished business with Gollum,” Jackson shares in his first statements after the news was revealed.

How does ‘Lord of the Rings’ movie fit with Amazon’s ‘The Rings of Power’?

Serkis confirms that the film will once again be shot in New Zealand, the settings that brought the previous films to life. Its production is still in the early stages of script development, although its screenwriters anticipate that it will “explore story arcs that are yet to be told.” It is clear that for Warner Bros, this is a key element of their roadmap for the coming years.

The films will take a different path than Amazon’s in terms of the universe they are building on the small screen. ‘The Rings of Power’ will remain an independent branch within the vast world woven by Tolkien and will not have any impact on what will be seen in the major motion picture productions. In fact, Jackson has emphasized on numerous occasions that he is not part of the Prime Video series project.
