When will the Billboard Music Awards take place?

While the award show is typically in the spring, this year is a little different.

The 2023 Billboard Music Awards has shifted away from its typical annual slot in the spring for a later date. The BBMA’s which typically take place in May will now be held on November 19.

The change in dates will see the BBMA’s return to the cooler months, which is when the show was originally held throughout its history. From its debut in 1990 until 2006 the BBMA’s were held in early December.

However, in 2006 and onwards the award show took place in May, except when the pandemic interrupted the 2020 show causing it to be pushed to an October date.

Last Year’s show

Last year’s 2022 show was held on May 15 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Los Vegas and was hosted by Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs. At the time 2.11 million people watched the show.

Disney star and pop singer Olivia Rodrigo won the most Billboard Music Awards in 2022, with seven wins total. While The Weeknd scored the most nominations with 17 and Doja Cat became the most nominated female act with 14.

The show had a variety of performers throughout the night including Megan Thee Stallion, Travis Scott, Jack Harlow, Bryson Tiller, Morgan Wallen, Ed Sheeran, Machine Gun Kelly, and more.

Looking for a new network

The date change isn’t the only change the Billboard Music Awards will see, the show is also looking for a new network to be held on. According to Deadline, the BBMA has been carried by Fox until 2006.

In 2011 the show was revived and aired on ABC for seven years, then on NBC for the past six. However, NBC has opted to not continue with the show and instead focus on their own People’s Choice Awards franchise, which they acquired in 2017.

The network also recently announced a spinoff franchise, the People’s Choice Country Awards which is set to debut this September.

This is not uncommon for TV producers as in 2021 CBS dropped the American Country Music Awards to focus on the company-owned Country Music Television Awards.
