The 2023 Oscars are making history, with two films receiving nominations in all four acting categories. Martin McDonagh’s ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ and The Daniels ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ lead the Oscar acting nominations, which includes many first-time Oscar nominations.
The last film to have nominations in all four acting categories was 2013′s ‘American Hustle’, which saw all four lead actors receive nominations, despite the awards going to others.
Which films have won in multiple acting categories?
To date, only two films have ever won in three of the four acting categories, and no film has ever won all four.
In 1951, Vivien Leigh, Karl Malden, and Kim Hunter won Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress for ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’. Lead actor Marlon Brando was also nominated for Best Actor, but lost to Humphrey Bogart.
In 1976, ‘Network’ became the second film to win three acting awards. Actors Peter Finch, Faye Dunaway, and Beatrice Straight won Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress.
Only four films have received nominations in all five major categories which, aside from the acting nominations, include Best Motion Picture. These films are ‘Mrs. Miniver’ in 1942, ‘From Here to Eternity’ in 1953, ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ in 1968, and ‘Network’ in 1976.
‘Banshees’ and ‘Everything’ compete in many of the same categories
The two films have a collective 20 Oscar nominations, many in the same categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Film Editing.
Colin Farrell is up for the Best Actor award for ‘Banshees’, which also marks his first-ever Oscar nomination in his 26-year-long career. Meanwhile, Michelle Yeoh is nominated for Best Actress, which is also her first Oscar nomination since beginning her career in 1983.
‘Banshees’ costars Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan are both up for Best Supporting Actor, becoming the 22nd pair of costars to be up for the same award. The last costars to be nominated were Jack Nicholson and John Lithgow in ‘Terms of Endearment’ (1984), with Nicholson winning the Oscar.
Similarly, Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu are both nominated for Best Supporting Actress for ‘Everything’, marking the 36th time two actresses from the same film were nominated for the award. The last time this happened was in 2003 for the film ‘Chicago’, where Catherine Zeta-Jones won over her costar Queen Latifah.
