Who did James Darren play in Star Trek? What else was he famous for?

The singer and actor of several top roles has passed away at the age of 88, with tributes immediately pouring in.

The film world is in mourning. James William Ercolani, better known as James Darren, has passed away in his sleep at the age of 88. It is a death that has taken his loved ones somewhat by surprise, since the famous actor was under care and awaiting a potential operation.

It was at the Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles where the singer died while he was admitted for doctors to decide whether to replace a heart valve, as reported by his son, the journalist Jim Moret.

James Darren: Gidget, T.J. Hooker, Star Trek

Darren first rose to fame after playing surfer Moondoggie in the romantic comedies Gidget. His early success allowed him to try his luck in music and continue landing roles in such high-profile jobs as police officer Jim Corrigan in the popular series T. J. Hooker. He also played holographic lounge singer Vic Fontaine in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine giving him a place in the hearts of viewers around the world.

Tributes for James Darren

One of the first people to bid farewell to the renowned actor and singer was his friend Nancy Sinatra, whose daughter the singer was godfather to.

“One of my dearest, closest friends in all the world, of all my life has passed away,” she wrote on social media. “Godfather to my daughter, AJ. Wishing him a fast & beautiful journey through the Universe & beyond. Godspeed, sweet Jimmy. My heart is torn but full of love for Evy, Christian, Anthony & Jimmy Jr.”

William Shatner, his co-star in the 1980s police drama, also had some loving words for him.

“I worked with him for several years and then we’d see each other on occasion. What a wonderful man - so talented; so loving. I had the best time with him. The world is less because of his loss.”
