Who is Elon Musk’s brother? What is Kimbal Musk’s net worth?
While Kimbal Musk has worked with his more famous billionaire brother Elon, his true passion lies elsewhere. Learn more about this investor-restaurateur.
It’s a coin toss whether or not you’ll find Elon Musk at the top of the ‘richest people in the world’ Google search you’ll do after reading this. It could be Bernard Arnault, who owns more companies than we’ve had hot dinners, but it could be Mr Musk, the owner of Tesla, and we’d have no complaints.
The South African destroyer of Twitter is, for obvious reasons, one of the most recognisable faces in the world. But apart from naming his child X Æ A-12, Musk’s private/family life is kept reasonably quiet.
The American audience got a closer look at the billionaire’s family, when Kimbal Musk, Elon’s brother, appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last month. But who is Kimbal? Is he as rich as his brother?
Is Kimbal as rich as Elon?
Not quite. But he’s not emptying the big coin pot in his house for loose change just yet. Kimbal is an investor in both Tesla - Elon’s electric vehicle company - and Paypal.
As well as sitting on the board for one of the biggest electric car companies in the world, co-founding Paypal and being a Chipotle board director, Kimbal is also a chef.
Pressfarm writes that Kimbal, born on September 20 1972, owns The Kitchen Restaurant Group, “a chain of community restaurants”. He’s on the board of SpaceX and is the co-founder of urban farming company The Square Roots. He also has time to wear a denim shirt and a cowboy hat in every photo I’ve seen of him. This man knows no bounds.
What is Kimbal Musk’s net worth?
With all these business ventures, it’s no surprise that Kimbal is not short for cash. According to Forbes he’s not quite at the billionaire status level, but a net worth of $752 million (as of Nov. 2021) is not a shabby figure.
Anyway, back to his story. Kimbal left South Africa after graduating to move to Kingston Ontario, Canada, when shortly after he took a degree at Queens University, studying business. His first source of money came from selling the company he set up, Zip2, for $350 million before co-founding Paypal which was later bought by Ebay.
Once Kimbal had moved to New York he joined the French Culinary Institute to follow his passion for food. He later launched The Kitchen, which is now one of America’s top restaurants. Kimbal is a father of three to mother Jen Lewin, but the couple divorced in 2018 and he remarried, tying the knot with Christiana Wyly.
