OSCARS 2024
Who is Justine Triet, the director nominated to win the Oscar for Best Directing for ‘Anatomy of a Fall’
With Oscar night almost here, it’s time to take a closer look at the woman who has been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director: Justine Triet.
In this year’s Oscars, there are five filmmakers who have been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director, however, it would be safe to say that there is one among them who stands out from the rest. Indeed, Justine Triet is the only woman nominated in the category this year and is only the eighth woman in the Academy’s history to receive that honor.

So, who is Justine Triet?
Born in Fécamp, France, Justine Triet is not just a talented filmmaker but a writer as well. Her film “Anatomy of a Fall” which has received five Oscar nominations in total including best picture and best original screenplay, is also one that she wrote. Of course, Triet first came to the attention of film fans with her 2019 film “Sybil” which won rave reviews at the Cannes Film Festival that year. As for her most recent effort, “Anatomy of a Fall” is a French-language film that follows the story of a writer who has been put on trial for her husband’s murder.
To date the film has also received four Golden Globe nominations, winning Best Screenplay and Best Motion Picture — non-English language. What’s more, is that the film also picked up the Palme d’Or award at Cannes - the most prestigious award on offer at the festival. At 45 years old, she now finds herself standing alongside some of the best directors in the business as we prepare for the Oscars. The other nominees in the category include the legendary Martin Scorsese whose “Killers of the Flower Moon” turned heads upon its release last year, Jonathan Glazer with his “The Zone of Interest”, Yorgos Lanthimos with “Poor Things”, and finally Christopher Nolan for “Oppenheimer.”
Interestingly, Triet co-wrote the film with her husband, Arthur Harari, who also worked with her on “Sybil.” Were she to win, she would share the award for Best Original Screenplay with him.
Of course, as mentioned before Triet’s nomination itself - regardless of the outcome - is a major achievement as she is now the eighth woman in history to be nominated in the category. Of the group that she is now a part of, only three women have won the award: Jane Campion who was nominated twice and won with “The Power of the Dog” in 2021, Chloé Zhao, who won in 2020 with “Nomadland”, and Kathryn Bigelow, who won in 2009 with “The Hurt Locker”.
It’s worth noting that another woman turned heads with a film this year and that would be Greta Gerwig and the worldwide phenomenon that was “Barbie.” Conversely, though the movie received Golden Globe nominations for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay, it didn’t get a nod in either category from the Academy. Regardless, this remains a significant step forward for women in the industry.
