Who is performing at the 2023 Academy Awards?

All of this year’s nominees for Best Original Song at the Oscars will be performing except one.

With the 2023 Academy Awards just around the corner, the official performer list is shaping up with numerous big names. Typically the musical performances for the night consists of the various stars who were nominated for Best Original Song at the award show.

This year, however, is a little bit different as Lady Gaga, who is nominated, will not be performing or in attendance at all due to scheduling conflicts. The star is currently working hard on set for the upcoming ‘Joker’ sequel, set to be released in October 2024.

Meaning only four of the five songs nominated at the 2023 Oscars will be performed throughout the night. While Gaga will not be performing this year, she was previously nominated and won for her song ‘Shallow’ from ‘A Star is Born’ at the 2018 Oscars.

Not only did the singer and actress win Best Original Song, but she was also nominated for Best Actress for her role in the movie and performed the song alongside Bradley Cooper at the Award show.

Rihanna

While fans will miss out on Lady Gaga this year, there are plenty of other big performances to look forward to. This year Rihanna will take the stage for the first time since her iconic Super Bowl halftime show.

Rihanna, a first-time Oscar nominee will be performing her song ‘Lift Me Up’ which was produced as a tribute to Chadwick Boseman who played King T’Challa in the Black Panther and Marvel films before passing away from cancer in 2020.

Son Lux, David Bryne, and Stephanie Hsu

Unfortunately, Mitski won’t be at this year’s Oscars to perform alongside David Bryne and Son Lux for their song ‘This is A Life’ which was produced for ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once.’

Thankfully the Best Supporting Actress nominee for the film, Stephanie Hsu will be taking Mitski’s place for their performance. Hsu has had previous musical experience with her role in ‘Be More Chill’ on Broadway.

Sofia Carson and Diane Warren

Warren is well known at the Academy Awards, as one of the most decorated songwriters of all time. She has received 14 nominees in the Best Original Song category over the last 35 years. This year she will also be recognized with the Academy Honorary Award for her contributions to music.

For her performance, she will be accompanied by actress and singer Sofia Carson to perform ‘Applause’ from the Italian anthology film, ‘Tell It Like a Woman.’

Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava

Duo Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava will be performing their song ‘Naatu Naatu’ from the film ‘RRR’ this year. This performance will make history as the song is the first from an Indian film ever to be nominated for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards.

So far ‘Naatu Naatu’ has won in its respective categories at the 2023 Golden Globe Awards and 2023 Critic’s Choice Awards.

Lenny Kravitz

Although not nominated for any categories this year, Lenny Kravitz will be performing for the Oscars ‘In Memoriam’ segment. The segment honors various big names in the film industry who passed away typically in the last year or so.

Past singers of this segment include Celine Dion, Queen Latifah, Sammy David Jr, and Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam.

The 2023 Academy Awards will take place on March 12 at 8 p.m. ET.
