‘Anora’ director Baker equalled a 71-year-old Oscars record on Sunday, as his film won five awards at the ceremony in Los Angeles.
Low budget Anora was the dominant film at Sunday’s 2025 Oscars ceremony as it scooped an unmatched five awards at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday night. As well as winning Best Picture, Best Director, Best Editing and Best Original Screenplay, the Best Actress accolade went to the romantic comedy-drama’s star, Mikey Madison.
The only category in which Anora was nominated and failed to secure the Oscar was Best Supporting Actor. Yura Borisov lost out to A Real Pain’s Kieran Culkin, who had been the heavy pre-awards favorite.
With the five wins, Anora director Sean Baker tied Walt Disney’s record for the most award wins by an individual at a single Academy Awards ceremony.
Disney took home four golden statuettes at the 1954 Oscars, winning the awards for Best Documentary Feature, Best Documentary Short Subject, Best Animated Short Film and Best Short Subject (Two-Reel).
Baker is the first person to pick up four Oscars for the same movie, as Disney’s victories were for several different productions: The Living Desert; The Alaskan Eskimo; Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom; and Bear Country.
Who is Sean Baker?
Sean Baker was born in New Jersey in 1971 and has carved a niche for himself for his films focusing on society’s marginalised. Anora is his eighth major production after making his directorial film debut back in 2000 with Four Letter Words. Take Out (2004), Starlet (2012), Tangerine (2015), The Florida Project (2017), Red Rocket (2021) were his other movies before striking gold with Anora which was released globally in 2024.
Baker had previously won a series of secondary film awards before the 2025 Oscar Awards and Anora.
His Canadian wife Samantha Quan has worked with the director as a producer on a number of his films with Baker citing the likes of Ken Loach, Spike Lee and Mike Leigh as major influences on his work.
