Why did the VMAs get moved? What is the new date for the MTV Music Awards 2024?
Taylor Swift is the most nominated artist at the 2024 VMAs, 12 months after picking up a record nine awards.
After barely being out of the headlines in recent times, it will surprise few to learn Taylor Swift leads the way in terms of nominations for the upcoming MTV Video Music Awards.
VMAs moved for Presidential reasons
The latest edition of the gala was set to take place on Tuesday, September 10 at the 19,000-capacity UBS Arena in Elmont, New York at 8:00 p.m. ET / 5:00 p.m. PT.
However, the event was swiftly moved to Wednesday Sept. 11 to avoid conflicting with the planned U.S. Presidential debate between vice president Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump. In a press release announcing the switch, MTV said “Our fans are encouraged to tune in for the 9/10 debate ahead of music’s most iconic night.”
It will now air live from UBS Arena in New York on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
Billboard.com goes deeper and explains that the reason behind the change has to do with the fact that MTV have “made boosting voter turnout and civic engagement a part of its brand since the 1992 election, in which Bill Clinton unseated George H.W. Bush.”
Who has the most nominations at the 2024 VMAs?
Swift will almost certainly take home at least one of MTV’s coveted ‘Spaceman’ statuettes after receiving 10 nominations, including for Video of the Year, Song of the Year, Artist of the Year and Best Pop Artist.
The “Shake It Off” singer has won 23 VMAs to date, nine of which came in 2023, the record for a single year.
Mainly thanks to his collaboration with Swift on “Fortnight,” which is up for prizes in eight categories, Post Malone is the second most nominated artist with nine. Sabrina Carpenter, Eminem and Ariana Grande are all up for six awards, and SZA and Megan Thee Stallion have five nominations each.
How to vote in the 2024 MTV VMAs
If you have especially strong feelings about who or which songs should win a certain MTV Video Music Award, then you’re in luck. The winners are decided by public vote, which fans can already take part in.
To vote, head over to vma.mtv.com, log in with a Google, X or email account, and select the artist or song of your choice in each available category. Once you’re done making your selections, don’t forget to click the “submit votes” button so the system can record your votes. Fans can vote up to 20 times per category per day, awards organisers say.
In 15 categories, fan voting will be open until Friday August 30. Voting for the winner of the Best New Artist award will remain open until during the ceremony.
