Why Ryan Reynolds’ first proposal for ‘Deadpool 3′ was rejected by Marvel Studios
Hollywood A-lister, and owner of Wrexham AFC, Ryan Reynolds, had a curious proposal for the movie script that did not come to fruition.
‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is poised to become one of the greatest successes in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and that’s no small feat, especially at a time when superhero cinema appears to be on the decline. A film that seems to have everything to elevate this genre of production to new heights, and rightfully so, as Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman together are reason enough to flock to the theaters. But, in a curious backstory to its development, Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, spoke to Empire magazine and revealed that he didn’t initially accept Reynolds’ first proposal for the movie.
Feige disclosed Reynolds’ proposal, with the actor himself stating that ‘Deadpool 3′ was originally envisioned as a “Rashomon-style story about Wolverine and Deadpool and something they got involved in together, but told from three completely different perspectives. It was a way to make a big-scale movie in a very small way.”
Rashomon is a cinematic classic, a masterpiece by Akira Kurosawa released in 1950, which tells the story of a samurai, his wife, and a bandit, with an encounter that culminates in murder, betrayal, and rape. Each character recounts their own version of events before a tribunal, with the samurai intervening through a medium.
‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and the Ryan Reynolds “idea machine”
Reynolds’ concept would have allowed for the multiple use of film footage, thus creating a blockbuster production in a more modest manner.
It’s an intriguing idea that could potentially be employed in the future within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Feige made another important point, though: “Ryan is an idea machine. So, he might have thrown that at me, but he also threw another 25 thoughts and ideas.”
