Will season three of ‘Ted Lasso’ be the last?
Fans are hopeful that season three won’t be the end of Ted Lasso’s story
Fans of Apple TV+’s sports-comedy series ‘Ted Lasso’ may have heard conflicting stories about whether season three will also be the series finale.
Jason Sudeikis, who plays the titular Ted Lasso, has said that they had always planned on releasing three seasons, but fans are hopeful that more Ted Lasso will be on the way.
Conflicting Reports
Sudeikis has previously said he was unsure what the future would bring for ‘Ted Lasso’.
“I don’t know, it’s up to more factors than myself,” Sudeikis said backstage at the Emmy’s after the show had won four Emmys at the 2022 show.
“The response has been overwhelming. We have a tremendous group of writers, actors, people in production and post-production, all of those thrown in the jambalaya of possibility. I couldn’t say yes or no. I know this part of the show is what it’s supposed to be. I apologize for not giving you a direct answer because that’s more helpful for headlines. If I knew, I wouldn’t tell you.”
Meanwhile, Brett Goldstein, who plays Roy Kent and is also an executive producer on the show said that the season three finale was being written as the series finale.
“We are writing it like that,” he told the Sunday Times. “It was planned as three.”
Showrunner Bill Lawrence also previously told Deadline in 2021 that when he, and his fellow co-creators Sudekis, Brendan Hunt, and Joy Kelly pitched the show they had said “this series was only going to be three seasons.”
As of last week, Sudeikis appeared to echo these sentiments, telling Deadline:
“This is the end of this story that we wanted to tell, that we were hoping to tell, that we loved to tell,” Sudeikis said.
“The fact that folks will want more and are curious beyond more than what they don’t even know yet—that being Season 3—it’s flattering.”
Possible spinoffs
While most signs are pointing to the stronger chance that season three is the end of ‘Ted Lasso’ as a series, Sudeikis and his fellow co-creators are open to the idea of spinoffs.
“Yeah, I think that we’ve set the table for all sorts of folks…to get to watch the further telling of these stories,” he said.
“Again, I can’t help but take the question as flattery for what all of us that were working on the show has tried to do. It’s really kind of folks to even consider that because you never know what’s gonna happen when you make things. The fact that people want more, even if it’s a different avenue is lovely.”
