Will Smith admits he turned down ‘Inception’: “I didn’t get it...”
The actor confessed 16 years later that he passed on ‘Inception’ because he didn’t understand it. As with The Matrix, he let another iconic role slip away.
Will Smith was one of Hollywood’s biggest stars in the 2000s thanks to hits like I, Robot (2004), I Am Legend (2007), and Hancock (2008). Directors lined up to work with him — including Christopher Nolan.
Before casting Leonardo DiCaprio, Nolan actually offered Smith the lead role in Inception. Smith has now revealed why he said no: he simply didn’t get the movie.
Sixteen years after Inception premiered, Smith finally explained why he passed on what many critics consider Nolan’s best film.
“I don’t think I’ve ever even said it publicly before, and I’m going to say it now because we’re opening up to one another,” Smith told Kiss Xtra’s Craig Mitch. “Chris Nolan brought me Inception first, and I didn’t get it... I’ve never said that out loud. It’s an exclusive. And now that I think about it, it’s those movies that go into those alternate realities that don’t pitch well. But I’m hurt by those two,” he said, referring not only to Inception but also to The Matrix.
Smith famously turned down The Matrix to star in the disastrous Wild Wild West, a decision he later joked about: “I would’ve ruined it,” he once said. Even so, many fans still argue that almost anything would’ve been better than headlining Wild Wild West, widely considered one of the weakest films in his career.
Is ‘Inception’ really that hard to understand?
When Inception hit theaters in 2010, some viewers found it confusing — but it’s far from Nolan’s most complex work. Despite its layers of alternate realities and subconscious heists, many fans consider films like Tenet (which several cast members admit they still don’t fully understand), The Prestige with its time jumps and misdirection, or Interstellar with its heavy physics concepts, to be far more challenging. And of course, Memento, told in reverse chronological order, remains one of Nolan’s most mind‑bending creations.
