Will there be a season two of Netflix’s ‘3 Body Problem’?
Based on the first book in Liu Cixin’s trilogy of novels, the eight-part sci-fi series premiered on the streaming platform this week.
There is no official word yet on whether there will be a second season of the new TV series 3 Body Problem, but the show’s creators are already making plans for another instalment of the science-fiction story.
Based on Liu Cixin’s novel The Three-Body Problem, which is the first in a trilogy of books, the series’ eight-part opening season was released in full on the streaming service Netflix on Thursday 21 March.
What is 3 Body Problem about?
“The story begins in 1960s China when a young woman makes a fateful decision that reverberates across space and time into the present day,” Netflix’s official synopsis of the series says.
“When the laws of nature inexplicably unravel, a tight-knit group of brilliant scientists must join forces with an unflinching detective to stop humanity’s greatest threat. 3 Body Problem is an epic story that redefines sci-fi drama with its layered mysteries and story of human connection.”
Created by David Benioff, DB Weiss and Alexander Woo, the series comes on the back of 2023′s Three-Body, a Chinese TV adaptation of the book.

Will there be a second season of 3 Body Problem?
While Netflix hasn’t confirmed whether or not 3 Body Problem is going to be renewed, the series’ showrunners have said they “have a pretty evolved sense” of what a second season would look like. Indeed, they have plans for multiple additional seasons - but are less clear on how they would follow a second run of episodes.
In an interview with the Inside Total Film podcast this week, Woo said: “We have some really strong ideas about what to do in a season two, and then it’s a little hazier down the line. But we want to get to the end, we want to get to the end of the trilogy, and whether that’s three or four [seasons], or some other number…”
“We don’t have a second season, but…”
Weiss, who alongside Benieff also created the hit series Game of Thrones, added: “We don’t have a second season, but we kind of need to keep pushing forward as if we did, because if we do get a second season, we’ll need to hit the ground running in terms of pre-production and production, to get it out to people in some kind of reasonable time.
“A show like this takes a long time to make, and you can’t wait to get started thinking about until someone gives you the green light. So, the second season, we have a pretty evolved sense of where it’s going. We’ve been doing some work on that front.”
