Willem Dafoe joins ‘Beetlejuice 2’ cast

The ‘Beetlejuice’ sequel is shaping up. After Warner Bros. greenlit the sequel to the iconic 1988 movie, titled ‘Beetlejuice 2′, the cast announcements have begun.

The newest addition to the official cast is American actor Willem Dafoe. It’s still under wraps what role Dafoe will be taking on.

Other upcoming projects for Dafoe include Wes Anderson’s ‘Asteroid City’, Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘Poor Things’ and Robert Eggers’ ‘Nosferatu’.

Details of the upcoming film

The movie is set to release on September 6, 2024, with Michael Keaton reprising his iconic role as Beetlejuice, along with Winona Ryder and Jenna Ortega as Lydia and her daughter. Justin Theroux has also been confirmed to join the cast in an undisclosed role.

However, the plot details are still unknown, but it may be based on the scrapped sequel, ‘Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian’. The movie has faced various delays due to the busy schedules of the lead actors and directors, and there has been talk of production delays due to the Writers Guild of America strike.

Tim Burton will return to direct from a script by hit Netflix series ‘Wednesday’s’ Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, with Burton, Tommy Harper, Plan B, Marc Toberoff, and David Geffen producing. Danny Elfman will return to score the upcoming film.

What was ‘Beetlejuice’ about?

The original film revolves around a recently deceased couple, Barbara and Adam Maitland, played by Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin, who find themselves trapped as ghosts in their own home. When a new family moves into their house, the Maitlands attempt to scare them away but soon realize that their ghostly powers are limited.

In order to reclaim their home, the Maitlands seek the help of an obnoxious and mischievous ghost named Betelgeuse, played by Michael Keaton.

However, Betelgeuse’s chaotic nature and disregard for the living and the dead make matters worse. The film follows the Maitlands’ efforts to navigate the afterlife, protect their home, and find a way to move on.

‘Beetlejuice’ blends elements of comedy, horror, and the supernatural. It is known for its distinctive visual style, dark humor, and memorable characters. The film achieved both critical and commercial success, becoming a cult classic and solidifying Burton’s reputation as a unique filmmaker.
