Living well without spending a fortune has become a challenge for many Americans. With the real estate market becoming unstable in recent years and the cost of living rising, finding an affordable city in which to live well has become a truly complicated task.

According to Livingcost, a collaborative database with a cost of living calculator for various countries around the world, the current cost of living in the United States stands at a national average of $2,433 per month for an individual and up to $5,667 for a family of four.

However, there are certain regions of the country where the cost of living is more inexpensive.

This is made possible by a variety of factors, ranging from the price of food, housing, healthcare, transportation, and utilities, just to name a few. To find out which states are cheaper, you need to know their cost of living index, which is calculated by comparing the factors listed above.

The average index is 100 units, so any number above this means it is more expensive to live in an area. Meanwhile, indexes less than 100 imply more economical areas. Along these lines, the Kiplinger company carried out a study which revealed the 10 most affordable cities in the United States in 2024.
