The Social Security Administration (SSA) is now in the midst of May 2026’s benefits schedule, having paid multiple groups of recipients at the start of the month.
However, there are also millions of beneficiaries across the U.S. who must wait until at least the middle of next week to receive their May money.
Here’s what to know about this month’s payment timeline, both for Social Security (retirement, disability or survivor benefits) and for Supplemental Security Income (SSI):
Who has the Social Security Administration paid so far in May 2026?
On Friday, May 1, three groups of benefits recipients were scheduled to get their latest payment:
- SSI beneficiaries
A benefit with over 7.3 million recipients across the U.S., SSI is issued on the first day of each month.
A program for certain low-income, low-resource individuals, SSI is separate from Social Security. Both are operated by the SSA, but SSI differs as it is a purely needs-based scheme: eligibility does not depend on a claimant’s employment history.
- Some long-term Social Security recipients
May 1 was this month’s Social Security payment date for recipients who began receiving the benefit before May 1997. This group’s typical distribution date would be May 3, but it was brought forward as this date was a Sunday.
- Dual recipients: Social Security + SSI
Social Security was also paid two days ahead of schedule to the approximately 2.5 million recipients who combine retirement, disability or survivor benefits with SSI.
When does May’s three-Wednesdays cycle begin?
Most of the U.S.’s 71.1 million Social Security recipients will be paid retirement, disability or survivor benefits on the second, third or fourth Wednesday in May.
A beneficiary’s allocated Wednesday depends on the birthday of the worker whose employment history has earned the benefits entitlement:
- Born on 1st-10th of any month: Wednesday, May 13
- Born on 11th-20th of any month: Wednesday, May 20
- Born on 21st-31st of any month: Wednesday, May 27
