2023 tax season: IRS special schedule for in-person assistance

The 2023 tax season is underway, and Americans have until 18 April to file. Here is the special timetable for taxpayers to get in-person help from the IRS.

The 2023 tax season is underway. The IRS will continue to receive and process tax returns for fiscal year 2022 which are due April 18. Taxpayers who file an extension request can have until October 16 to file their return.

As the tax season continues, the IRS announced last week special Saturday hours on select dates over the next several months. This schedule will apply to all Taxpayer Assistance Centers (TACs) throughout the country.

Tax season: IRS special schedule for in-person assistance

According to a statement from the US tax agency, the special Saturday availability nationwide will take place from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, on March 11, April 8 and May 13. Offices in dozens of states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico will be open during this special timetable without an appointment.

“These Saturday openings are part of the extra steps the IRS is taking to make a difference for taxpayers [...] These special Saturday hours will help people get the services they need,” said Acting IRS Commissioner Doug O’Donnell in the statement.

At TACs, people can receive in-person help from IRS staff. These centers are not normally open on Saturdays and individuals must make an appointment to receive services. During these Saturday hours, individuals may walk in to receive all services routinely offered in the office, with the exception of cash payments. They can also ask about setting up an Online Account and getting an Identity Protection PIN, among other topics.

According to the statement from the Internal Revenue Service, there will be interpreters for several languages through a translation service over the phone. IRS staff will schedule appointments for a later date for people who are deaf or hard of hearing who need sign language interpreter services.

This is what you need to attend a Taxpayer Assistance Center (TACs):

  • Current government-issued photo ID
  • Social Security cards and/or Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs) for members of your household, including spouse and dependents
  • Any letters or notices received from the IRS and related documents
  • For identity verification services, bring two forms of identification and, if already filed, a copy of the tax return for the year in question

During the visit, IRS staff may also request the following information:

  • A current mailing address
  • Proof of bank account information to receive direct deposit payments or refunds
