IRS 2023 | Free programs to file taxes

The 2023 tax season is underway. Taxpayers have until 18 April to submit a tax declaration. Here are the free programs to file your tax return this year.

The 2023 IRS tax season continues. This year, the tax agency began receiving and processing tax returns for fiscal year 2022 starting 23 January. The deadline to file the return is April 18 or October 16 if an extension is requested and taxes are paid before April 18.

The IRS encourages taxpayers to have all their tax documents on hand to file an accurate tax return and receive their refund as soon as possible.

Every year, by law, taxpayers must file their tax return. However, most Americans must go to a third party in order to do so or pay for any tax filing software program. However, we will share some free options with you.

Free File

The IRS has the Free File program, which, while free, is not available to all taxpayers. Free File is available to people with an adjusted gross income of $73,000 or less (about 70% of taxpayers).

The IRS Free File Program is a public-private partnership between the IRS and many leaders in the tax preparation and filing software industry who offer their commercial products for free. This program provides two ways for taxpayers to prepare and file their federal income taxes at no cost:

  • Guided Tax Preparation: Offers free tax preparation and filing on IRS partner websites.
  • Free File Interactive Forms: electronic federal tax forms, equivalent to a paper Form 1040 (SP), but without guided help. This is a free option for taxpayers whose income is greater than $73,000. For more information visit the IRS web portal.

VITA and TCE Program

The IRS has the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program, which offer free basic tax help to certain people.

The VITA centers offer free tax help to people who need assistance with preparing their own tax returns, including:

  1. People with $60,000 or less in income
  2. People who have a disability
  3. People who have limited English proficiency
